I Used to Think Eye Makeup Was Just Supposed to Be Annoying

There's a specific list of small frustrations I accepted for years as just... part of doing eye makeup. Lash glue drying too fast, or not fast enough. A curler that pinches if you hold it a second too long, and does nothing at all if you don't. Redoing one eye three times while the other sits there, uneven, judging you.

I never questioned any of it. I assumed that was the tax you paid for good lashes.

The lash glue thing broke first. I was getting ready for something with a friend who does makeup far more casually than I do, and she had her strip lashes on in about ten seconds, no drying time, no repositioning panic. Turns out the strips had tiny magnets built into the band, paired with a magnetic liner instead of glue the lash basically clicks onto a line you've already drawn. No tacky waiting period. No adhesive slowly failing on you three hours into the night.

I was annoyed at myself, honestly, for how many rushed mornings I'd sacrificed to traditional glue before trying the obvious alternative.

The curler was a slower realization. I'd always used the mechanical spring kind fine most days, but inconsistent, and occasionally the reason for a very short, very sharp regret if I clamped down wrong. Somewhere along the way I tried a heated version, the kind that warms slightly before you use it, almost like a mini flat iron for lashes. The curl held longer, with less clamping force needed, and  the part that actually surprised me  it didn't feel like a coin flip whether it'd work that day.

Neither of these changes was dramatic on its own. But together, they quietly removed the two most annoying parts of doing my eyes, to the point where "eye makeup" went from a slightly dreaded five minutes to something I don't think about anymore.
